Nick Geddes - F__k Cancer, Ride Bikes!

by brad holmes
Aug 8, 2011 at 18:32

Accepted to the University of British Columbia for engineering while also preparing for his final year as a junior. At 18 Nick Geddes was going into 2011 with a ton of anticipation and momentum from his hard work at school and on his bike.

Nick showing the Ben and Dan the line.
Nick showing the Ben and Dan the line.

A few months ago Nick had a new battle forced upon him. This time not a battle against the clocks, gnarly courses or intellectual challenges he was used to. A small crash at the Sea Otter Classic that involved some routine blood work revealed that Nick had T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Nick has endured months of intense radiation and chemotherapy. He is currently at the BC Children's Hospital undergoing preparations for a Bone Marrow Transplant. In the weeks before he left for his transplant I had the opportunity to film with Nick. Knowing Nick it didn't surprise me that he was riding his bike during his treatments. It was the speed and intensity he rode at that blew me away. From watching Nick keep up to Ben Reid and Dan Stanbridge to getting dropped by him as he climbs up Lumpy's Epic in his middle ring. All while he has tubes from treatment sticking out of the middle of his chest, Nick never ceases to amaze me.

Haha, I don't think it mattered because he's pretty on point with that comment.

I can't wait to see what this guy has down the line after all this is put behind him. He seems like an incredibly talented rider and with such a good style, all only at the age of 18 as well. My only question is what are parents feeding these kids??

whilst i disagree with the 'on/off' comment, there is defintitely an effect that can be had through a change of diet. my mum, a multiple cancer sufferer has completely altered her diet to accomodate massively healthy cancer fighting foods such as the superfood wheatgrass and various other things to join in with chemo and radiotherapy to try and halt the spread of further cancer. fingers crossed it seems to be working. there are various books and articles on how diet can be a massive help, and from what ive seen, alongside the normal treatmeants, a lifestyle and diet change should be taken into account.

Nick is a massive inspiration and i wish him all the best in a speedy and full recovery.

flag Steezysix (Aug 9, 2011 at 5:56)
For sure, diet plays a big part in increasing/decreasing cancer risks - I had a bone marrow transplant 7 years ago and have tried to eat right and stay as fit as possible ever since. Green tea, lots of fruit & veg, less red meat, all these things are good, however when you're in the acute stages like Nick is, unfortunately the best cure (transplant) is aggressive and leaves you feeling like sh*t. He's young and obviously in good shape so hopefully he'll make a strong recovery. I wish him all the best.

flag specializedp2boy  (Aug 9, 2011 at 7:35)
definitely, im not sure why this got posted up here, it was in response to someone calling that sort of thing 'hocus pocus mumbo jumbo'. seeing the side effects of chemo and radiotherapy i can only imagine just how horrible and invasive a bone marrow transplant must be. im glad you made it through, and wish Nick good luck with his.

Give sittingduck a break, what he said is absolutely true. It is hard for a lot of people to digest because we are conditioned to believe that drugs/chemo are the only way off battling cancer.

Positive thoughts to you Nick, you will beat this thing.

Great job on the film Brad.

@sittingduck: While I know what you mean, your comment comes across as ignorant. A healthy lifestyle (exercise, good diet, positive outlook) will certainly help with the fight, but you cannot just 'turn off' cancer. You can improve the outcome of the treatments, but there are no guarantees. I'm fighting B-Cell (non-Hodgkin's) lymphoma right now, and I've looked into everything, and I'm realising that the biggest problem with the fight against cancer, is the misinformation and general ignorance that is floating around about the disease.

flag charlomarlo (Aug 11, 2011 at 16:51)
Your comment is the most sensible thing I've read here. Sittingduck's advice, while well intentioned, is just dangerous to people who will follow that advice without looking into it like you did.

good luck with your treatment and keep riding as often as possible!

And Im sure the naysayers will bitch bitch bitch, but "the National Cancer Institute bowed to a burgeoning legion of studies suggesting that one of the chemical compounds in cannabis slows -- or even stops -- uncontrolled cell growth. In one study, tumors in lab mice shrank once they were exposed to the compound CBD." http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2011/03/national_cancer_institute_adds.php
